Wikirebels (2010) – Bosse Lindquist & Jesper Huor
“WikiLeaks is a non-profit media organization dedicated to bringing important news and information to the public. We provide an innovative, secure and anonymous way for independent sources around the world to leak information to our journalists. We publish material of ethical, political and historical significance while keeping the identity of our sources anonymous, thus providing a universal way for the revealing of suppressed and censored injustices.” – http://www.wikileaks.org
Wikirebels is a documentary about Wikileaks the famous website that published and keep on publishing confidential information about governments all over the world.
Julian Assange, an Australian programmer, is the creator and the editor-in-chief of Wikileaks and is actually held in custody because he is accused of sexual harassment and rape.
I think this documentary is quite interesting because it really goes over the Wikileaks story (from its creation till now) in a very objective way. It is true that it is filmed only from the Assange side and it does not take the opposing opinion but, it doesn’t really defends Wikileaks. By watching this documentary you will simply know what is the real story of wikileaks without necessarily judging whether the publications of the website are legal freedom of speech or illegal violation of privacy.
The documentary uses videos and official publications to support what they are talking about and that gives a lot of credibility to the story.
The only concern I have towards Wikirebels is the backgrounds chosen for the interviews: I think they could have been more meaningful. However, I admit this is really a detail that won’t affect the overall impression given by the film.
